Day 1

Selected plan

Land in Palermo and loosen up

Keep the first day soft: unpack, find shade, and make the old city feel familiar before asking much of anyone.

Travel plan

PMO to central Palermo, then keep every stop walkable from the stay.

Flight lands at 11:00, taxi or airport train into town
Morning

Arrive at Palermo airport at 11:00, collect bags, and head straight to the apartment or hotel.

Siesta

Nap, grocery run, and a small orientation walk only if everyone has fuel in the tank.

Evening

Quattro Canti, Fontana Pretoria, an easy pasta dinner, and gelato close to home.

POIs on map

Let the first gelato become the official trip ceremony.

If the flight day bites back, make this a balcony/piazza night.

Base strategy

How to make the car days feel easy

The site currently leans toward a 4 + 2 + 1 split: Palermo first, western Sicily for two nights, then back to Palermo before the flight.

Simplest

All Palermo

Sleep all seven nights in Palermo and treat Cefalu, Monreale, Mondello, and one western drive as day trips.

Least packing, but the Zingaro/Erice day becomes long with a four-year-old.
Recommended

4 + 2 + 1 split

Four Palermo nights, two nights around Scopello or Trapani, then one final Palermo night before flying.

One move, but it makes western Sicily feel relaxed instead of conquered.
Tempting

Add the east

Etna, Taormina, Siracusa, or Ragusa are wonderful, but they pull the trip into a different shape.

Save it for another Sicily trip unless a bucket-list item makes it non-negotiable.

Family rhythm

Rules of thumb for July with a four-year-old

One headline per day, then let the rest be bonus Sicily.

Treat 13:00-16:30 as heat-protected time: nap, pool, quiet room, or train.

Do markets and monuments early; do beaches, piazzas, and gelato late.

Pack water shoes, hats, a tiny pharmacy, and a stroller that can survive cobblestones.

Ready for your next wave of ideas

These are placeholders to keep the draft flexible. When you bring restaurants, beaches, day trips, or must-see sights, they can drop into the map and itinerary without changing the whole structure.

Food compass

Small bites that can steer whole afternoons

  • Panelle sandwich after a market wander
  • Arancine taste test: butter vs ragu
  • Granita and brioche for breakfast on a hot day
  • Cannoli only when filled to order
  • Pasta con le sarde for the adults, plain pasta insurance for the small boss
  • Lemon, almond, and pistachio everything
